Overland Park home remodeling by Architectural Craftsmen

Besides offering superb craftsmanship using quality materials, good communication with our clients, a clean worksite, and a generous warranty period, what sets us apart from everyone else? First, we develop a relationship with our clients from the very beginning. We take the time to understand not only the lives and lifestyles of those who dwell within the home, but to discover the soul of the home itself. Secondly, our craftsmanship is impeccable! Some may say the devil is in the details, but we find delight in the details on our projects. It’s those little things that work together to make Architectural Craftsmen an award-winning remodeling firm.

Our Mission

We believe that every home has a story to tell. It is our mission to discover that story and to express it in the work we do through architectural design and craftsmanship.

About Us

Joe and MaryRaised in rural north central Kansas, Joe Thompson has been working with his hands from a young age. It began when he received a new bike for his 9th birthday. His father later found him in the machine shed taking it apart and modifying it (remodeling, if you will) to look like his older brother’s Harley Davidson chopper. After high school, he learned the carpentry trade at North Central Kansas Vocational Technical School. Graduating from there, he moved on to the School of Architecture and Design at Kansas State University.

Mary has always had a sense of good space design. As a child, she rearranged her bedroom on a weekly basis, and couldn’t wait for the next issue of Better Homes and Gardens, so she could study the floor plans in the back of the magazine. Her grandfather was a home builder for J. C. Nichols and her parents designed and built her childhood home. She went to K-State to study design, and when she met Joe, she had found her match. After graduating, Joe wanted to keep with the hands-on aspect of residential construction, and he began working as a superintendant for a large home builder in the Olathe area.

In 1988 they moved to Baldwin City where they restored their 1910 Queen Anne home. This is when they developed a passion for historical architecture and the desire to restore older homes to their original grandeur. Thus began Architectural Craftsmen. They have since had the pleasure of restoring older homes in Lawrence, Baldwin City, Leawood, Westwood and Kansas City’s Roanoke and Brookside neighborhoods, and remodeling homes in Overland Park, Lenexa, Prairie Village, Mission Hills, and Kansas City, Missouri.

For your project, both Joe and Mary will assist in the design process. You’ll find Joe on the jobsite with tools in hand, personally overseeing the work to assure everything is done to our high standards. Meanwhile, Mary will be managing your project; helping with material selections and making sure they are delivered on time, and keeping your project on budget.

Joe and Mary live in Overland Park with their three children and two dogs. Joe has been coaching youth basketball while Mary has been involved in Girl Scouts. They enjoy sports, nature, and remodeling their own home…when they can find the time.
